Cut protectors are practical topcoats that prevent damage (crater, cracks) or excessive clogging of bowls and downpipes. They are simply pulled over the cut and are so wafer-thin that the protectors do not prevent the fitting. It is the reverse case: For cheap bongs with wobbly cuts they tend to have a stabilizing effect.
