Blood Test for Drugs: Reliability, Detection Windows and Procedure
Weed Wissen
A blood test is regarded as a particularly reliable way to prove drug use, because it is virtually impossible to manipulate your own blood. That reliability is one reason why some legal systems give blood tests priority over other detection methods. From the moment a substance is consumed it is reflected in the blood, after all, the blood is the "carrier" that supplies the body with whatever was taken.
A blood test not only reveals drug use straight away, the substance can also still be traced long after it was taken. This applies above all to regular cannabis users, because in that case the substance may be detectable not just for a few hours, as is usual with other drugs, but in individual cases even over several weeks. With occasional use, however, cannabis usually stays in the blood for only a few hours. A blood test can even reveal the approximate amount and the exact time of use, which is how even long-term users can be identified. And it is not only cannabis: ecstasy, speed and cocaine can be detected in a blood test too, though generally only for up to around 24 hours.
Unlike a roadside rapid test, a blood test cannot be carried out directly at the scene, for example after a suspected traffic offence. It requires a proper setting such as a hospital or a police station. The exact rules and procedures differ from country to country, so it is worth checking the legal situation where you live.
