What should you keep in mind?

• Length and volume aren't the same thing! The length of a bong doesn't necessarily tell you anything about its volume. Beaker-style bongs, for instance, usually hold more than a taller straight-tube bong. The diameter and the shape of the neck can also have a big impact on the actual smoke volume.
• Smoke volume and water volume are two different things. A beaker bong may hold a lot of water, but that doesn't automatically mean it has more smoke volume than a straight-tube bong of the same size. The water level and the length of the chillum in particular can spring a few surprises here.
• Special features like ice catchers or percolators reduce the volume, so if you're after as much volume as possible, consider a bong without such elements.

Which volume is right for you?

• Under 500 ml: relatively small bongs, usually chosen by beginners. If you're looking for an affordable bong or prefer smaller hits, a bong in this size range is a good choice.
• Between 500 and 1000 ml: most bongs fall into this range, typically around 750 ml. So if you're after a 'normal' bong, this is the size to go for.
• Over 1000 ml: large bongs for experienced users, parties or especially intense sessions. Enjoy with caution, as they can bring an evening to an early close, though for some that's exactly the appeal.
• Over 2000 ml: bongs for very special needs. One example is the mighty Ehleminator. Think carefully before buying one of these; you really need to be comfortable with what you're smoking to get sensible use out of a bong of this size.
