Hash tea & cannabis tea: your route to relaxed, drinkable enjoyment
Interested in cannabis, but perhaps less so in smoking? Or simply looking for a new experience? Hash tea or cannabis tea could be an interesting option. Beyond the joint and the vaporizer, a whole world of drinkable cannabis opens up here. This method has a long tradition and offers a characteristic effect as an alternative to inhaling.
This guide has you covered: we explain the basics of hash tea, shine a light on the decisive steps of preparation (simply steeping the herb isn't enough for an effect!), give you clear instructions for flower and hash from a legal source, cover the effects and the all-important dosing, and share tips for a pleasant flavour. Discover this special form of tea-making.
Why tea instead of smoke? Discover the benefits
Sure, smoking and vaping are classics. But why prepare cannabis as a tea at all? This method scores with a few clear advantages:
- ✅ No smoke exposure: since nothing is burned, there's no strain on the lungs from smoke or vapour. A relief, and not only for sensitive airways.
- ✅ Discretion is possible: a cup of tea is socially well established and stands out less than other forms of consumption.
- ✅ A characteristic duration: the effects set in with a delay, but in return they can last over a longer period.
- ✅ Flavour variety: by adding different teas, herbs and spices, you can tailor the taste to your liking.
The be-all and end-all for the effect: understanding decarboxylation & fat
Before you get started, you need to internalise two absolute fundamentals. Ignore them and you'll end up drinking nothing but expensive, ineffective herbal water. We want to prevent that! It comes down to activating the active compounds (decarboxylation) and their solubility (fat is your friend!).
In raw cannabis, most THC is usually present as an inactive acid (THCA). To get the familiar psychoactive effect of THC, THCA has to be converted through heat, that's decarboxylation. At the same time, cannabinoids like THC are fat-soluble (lipophilic) but barely soluble in water. They need a fatty substance (such as butter, coconut oil, cream or whole milk) to release from the plant material and pass into the liquid.
💡 The formula for effective tea: correct decarboxylation (heat) + a sufficient source of fat = enables the uptake of the active compounds.
Hash & cannabis tea recipes: your step-by-step instructions
With the basics understood, preparation can begin. Here are instructions for processing legally possessed cannabis flower or hash from your own legal source, for personal use.
What you need: ingredients & equipment at a glance
- Cannabis material (from a legal source!):
- Dried cannabis flower OR
- Hash (choose the amount extremely carefully, see dosing!)
- Water: approx. 500 ml (for 1-2 cups)
- Source of fat (mandatory!): approx. 1 teaspoon per cup (butter, coconut oil, ghee, whole milk, cream...)
- Kitchen tools: saucepan, fine sieve, spoon
- Optional (flavour & help):
- Tea bags/loose tea
- Spices, herbs etc.
- Sweetener
- Grinder
- Baking tray/baking paper
Recipe 1: classic cannabis tea from flower (with oven decarboxylation)
The method for flower with controlled activation:
- Prepare: break up the required amount of flower.
- Activate (decarb): preheat the oven to about 110-115°C. Spread the material on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Heat for about 30-40 min. Let it cool.
- Set up the base: heat the water, dissolve the fat source in it, reduce the heat (simmer).
- Extract: add the activated cannabis. Let it steep at low heat for at least 15-20 min (longer is better).
- Flavour (optional): add tea bags/spices.
- Filter: pour through a fine sieve and press the residue well.
- Adjust: sweeten/refine to taste.
Recipe 2: intense hash tea (how to dissolve hash properly!)
A special method for hash:
- Prepare the hash: crumble the required amount of hash very finely.
- Dissolve the hash in fat (IMPORTANT!): warm the fat source at minimal heat. Add the hash. Heat gently for 5-10 min while stirring, until everything is dissolved into a homogeneous mixture. Don't let it burn!
- Add water & simmer: carefully add hot water. Bring to a brief boil, then let it steep for 10-15 min.
- Flavour (optional): add tea bags/spices.
- Filter (optional): pour through a sieve to be safe.
- Adjust: sweeten/refine.
Recipe 3: the simmer method (decarb straight in the pot)
An alternative without the oven:
- Break up the flower.
- Put the flower, fat source and water in a pot.
- Simmer for at least 60 min at a low temperature (below boiling point). Use a lid.
- Add flavour (optional), strain.
This method is less precise when it comes to activation.
💡 By the way: another cannabis drink tip! Another way to use up leftovers is to boil out your grinder in fatty milk. How that works and why extra caution about potency is called for here, you can read in our guide on boiling out your grinder.
Effect and dosing: enjoy safely, relax for hours
Taking cannabis orally leads to a different pattern of effect than inhaling. Knowing this is crucial for a positive and safe experience.
When does it kick in & how long does it last? The time factor with hash tea
- Onset: expect the effect only after 30 to 90 minutes, sometimes it takes up to 2 hours.
- Duration: in return, the effect often lasts 4 to 8 hours or longer.
➡️ Patience is the key! Give your body time.
How does it feel? The typical effects
The effect is individual, but is often described as:
- More body-focused: relaxation, sometimes a feeling of heaviness.
- Long-lasting: an effect that stretches over hours.
- Potentially intense: despite the slow start, the effect can be strong.
⚠️ Dosing: find your dose, but please be careful!
This is the most critical point when dealing with cannabis tea! Too high a dose can be very unpleasant (e.g. severe discomfort, anxiety, paranoia, nausea, dizziness). So proceed with extreme care:
- ‼️ ALWAYS START WITH A MINIMAL DOSE: especially as a beginner or with unknown material. Better too little than too much!
- No standard dose: the potency of cannabis varies enormously! There is no universally "safe" amount. Always ease your way in.
- Reference points (only a rough guide!):
- Flower: try less than 0.25 g per cup to start.
- Hash: begin with a barely visible amount (pinhead-sized)!
- ‼️ WAIT AT LEAST 90 MINUTES: absolutely essential! Wait for the full effect (2 hours is better) before you even think about a top-up.
- Increase slowly: if the effect was too weak, raise the amount only minimally next time.
⚠️ Safety note: oral intake acts with a strong delay and more intensely than inhalation. Be extremely careful with the dose and wait for the effect! Consume responsibly and never before driving or operating machinery.
Flavour upgrade: turn your tea into a taste highlight
Is the natural taste an acquired one? No problem! Here's how to give your cannabis tea a more pleasant note:
- Aromatic base: use strong teas (black tea, chai, intense herbal teas) as a foundation.
- Freshness & zing: citrus juice, fresh mint or grated ginger balance out the flavour.
- Spices: cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, star anise etc. (simmer whole spices along) add depth.
- Sweetness: add honey, agave syrup or sugar to taste.
- Creaminess: a little (plant) milk or cream can help.
Find your own favourite blend!
Choosing a strain: does the strain influence the tea?
Can the choice of cannabis strain shape the tea experience? Tendentially yes, even if the differences are often more subtle with oral intake:
- Indica-dominant: can be more relaxing and physical.
- Sativa-dominant: can be more uplifting and mentally stimulating.
- Hybrids: sit somewhere in between.
The terpene profile also influences aroma and potentially the effect.
Making tea legally? It depends on where you live
In some countries, adults are allowed to privately grow and possess certain amounts of cannabis, while in many places it remains restricted or illegal. So can you make tea from it?
- ✅ Personal use: where private possession is permitted, processing legally held cannabis into tea for personal use is generally understood to be part of that permission, but the details differ from country to country.
- ❌ No passing on: passing the tea to others or selling it is generally not allowed.
- ⚠️ Legal origin: make sure your cannabis was legally obtained or grown where you live.
Disclaimer: this is a general assessment and not legal advice. Laws and their interpretation can change and differ significantly by country. Always inform yourself about the current legal situation in your region.
Still have questions? Your hash tea & cannabis tea FAQ
Finally, answers to some common questions:
How strongly does the preparation smell?
Answer: decarboxylating in the oven in particular smells intensely of cannabis. The simmering is usually more subtle, but still noticeable. Good ventilation is advisable if the smell bothers you.
Can I use stems and leaves too?
Answer: in principle yes, but don't expect much effect. They contain hardly any active compounds. You'd need a lot of material for a minimal effect, and the flavour often suffers. More for using up leftovers than for a targeted effect.
Main difference between preparing hash vs. flower?
Answer: with hash you absolutely have to dissolve it well in warm fat first. With flower, extraction happens directly in the water-fat mixture (after oven decarboxylation).
How do I store finished cannabis tea?
Answer: in the fridge, sealed airtight (we stock suitable storage solutions). Use it up within a few days (2-4). Shake/stir well before enjoying.
Can I boost the effect with kief?
Answer: yes, you can add kief (from the grinder) while simmering (with fat!). Tinctures/oils are possible too. But be extremely careful with the additional dose!
Can I also make a drink from my grinder residue?
Answer: yes, this is a popular method to use even the last leftovers! The grinder is often boiled out in fatty milk to release the resin clinging to it. How exactly this works and what you need to watch out for (careful, potency!), you'll find in our detailed blog post on boiling out your grinder.
Are there ready-made (legal) cannabis tea bags to buy?
Answer: no, not with a relevant psychoactive effect (above 0.2/0.3% THC). Legally available hemp teas from industrial hemp have no intoxicating effect.
Is hash tea suitable for medical purposes?
Answer: a medical application or suitability should be discussed exclusively with a doctor. This article is not medical advice.
How do I avoid an overdose?
Answer: it bears repeating: dose minimally, wait a long time (at least 90 min), wait for the effect, not on an empty stomach, no mixing with alcohol/other substances, safe surroundings!
Ready for your own tea ceremony?
Preparing hash tea or cannabis tea is no witchcraft, but it does require knowledge and care. If you respect the principles of decarboxylation and fat solubility, and above all approach dosing with extreme caution, you can discover a whole new facet of cannabis enjoyment.

⚠️ Dosierung: Finde deine Dosis – Aber bitte vorsichtig!
Taste dich immer heran.
- Richtwerte (Nur grobe Orientierung!):
- ‼️ MINDESTENS 90 MINUTEN WARTEN: Absolut entscheidend!
Legal Tee zubereiten? Die Situation in Deutschland (CanG)
Das Cannabisgesetz (CanG) erlaubt Erwachsenen den privaten Anbau und Besitz bestimmter Mengen Cannabis. Darf man daraus Tee kochen?
