Was früher ein hochpräzises Spezialinstrument für Juwelen und Edelmetalle war, ist heute oft ein Sammelbegriff. Wir erklären, was eine Feinwaage ursprünglich ausmachte, warum sich ihre Bedeutung verändert hat und welche Rolle analoge und digitale Modelle heute spielen.

The term precision scale, or rather what it stands for, has steadily lost meaning over the past few years. Originally, the label "precision scale" was reserved for very accurate weighing instruments whose main purpose was handling valuable materials, where the highest possible accuracy really mattered. The hallmarks of a typical scale suited to this task were, above all, high-quality craftsmanship and the small calibration weights used with balance scales, for example. Precision scales were used mainly for jewels, minerals and precious metals.

Precision scales in the digital age

These accurate scales naturally involved a certain manufacturing effort, which back in those black-and-white days showed above all in their relatively high purchase price. As with scales in general, that is rather obsolete in the age of digital scales, since even budget-friendly weighing instruments can offer accuracies of 0.01 g. Even so, there are still plenty of analogue precision scales that continue to serve their purpose today. One advantage lies in the fact that they need no calibration, which can make re-weighing and cross-checking unnecessary, and another in their relatively simple manual operation.

Feinwaagen im digitalen Zeitalter

Diese genauen Waagen hatten natürlich einen gewissen Herstellungsaufwand, was sich damals in schwarzweiß Zeiten vor allem im relativ hohen Anschaffungspreis niederschlug. Wie bei Waagen generell ist dies im Zeitalter von Digitalwaagen eher obsolet, da auch preisgünstige Wiegeinstrumente mit Waaggenauigkeiten von 0,01g aufwarten können. Trotzdem gibt es eine Vielzahl von Feinwaagen analoger Bauart, die auch in der heutigen Zeit noch ihren Zweck erfüllen. Der Vorteil liegt zu einem in der fehlenden Notwendigkeit der Kalibration, was gegebenfalls erneutes Nachwiegen und Gegenkontrolle überflüssig macht und in den relativ einfachen manuellen Bedienung.
