Why long papers? When standard is simply not long enough
Sure, sometimes things have to be done quickly and a sticky from the normal green Gizeh Papes is completely sufficient for the moment.
But there are also moments that call for more - moretime, more content, more enjoyment. This is exactly what long papers are made for. They are more than just longer paper; they are a statement for slowing down and conscious enjoyment.
- The ritual: turning a longer bag takes more time, but is often perceived as more satisfying. It's a moment of preparation and anticipation.
- Perfect for sharing: Whether it's a cosy evening with friends or at festivals - with long papers you have enough for the whole group, which is known to strengthen the sense of community
- More space for your mix: you decide how much fits in. King size papers are ideal if you want a little more volume.
- Flavour development: Depending on the material and rolling method, more length can also mean that flavours develop differently or can be enjoyed over a longer period of time.
💡 In short: with long papers, you set the pace - and the size - of your own personal rolling ritual.
King Size vs. King Size Slim: Which long paper format suits you?
Not all longpapers are the same. The two most popular formats are King Size and King Size Slim. The choice between them not only influences the appearance of the finished joint, but also the rolling sensation and potentially the flavour.
Let's take a closer look at the differences:
King Size: The classic for maximum volume
- Dimensions: Typically approx. 100-110 mm long and approx. 52-58 mm wide.
- Application: Perfect if you want to store a lot of material or prefer more robust, thicker bags. Perfect for larger groups or if you simply need more space.
-
Advantages:
- ✅ Maximum capacity for large mixes
- Often easier to turn for beginners in long format as there is more paper to grip
- ✅ More robust construction and therefore less prone to tearing or breaking
-
Disadvantages:
- ❌ Higher paper content can slightly affect the flavour
- Sometimes seems a little clunkier
💡 Tip: Even if you smoke alone, it's worth rolling with King Size Papers. You can simply put the bag out in between and continue smoking later! To prevent unpleasant flavours , simply cut off the small coked end and relight the fuse!
King Size Slim: Less paper, more flavour?
- Dimensions: Also approx. 100-110 mm long, but significantly narrower at approx. 44 mm wide.
- Application: The favourite of many experienced rollers and pure smokers. The narrower shape makes for a more elegant bag with less overlapping paper.
-
Advantages:
- ✅ Less paper is smoked, which often leads to a purer flavour experience
- ✅ More elegant, slimmer look
- ✅ Less ash development
-
Disadvantages:
- ❌ Requires a little more practice and dexterity when rolling
- ❌ Offers slightly less space for your blend than the classic king size format
💡 Tip: King size slim long papers are ideal if the pure flavour of your blend is particularly important to you and you prefer a stylish, slim shape. They are the modern gold standard for many stoners.

The material makes the difference - even with long papers
Just as with short papers, the material also plays a decisive role in the burning behaviour, flavour and stability of long papers. As long papers naturally burn longer, the material properties are often even more important here.
Hemp, rice or cellulose: what is suitable for what in the long format?
- Hemp: The robust environmental friend. Long papers made from hemp often have a better grip and are more tear-resistant - an advantage when handling large formats. They usually burn slowly and evenly and are often available as an unbleached version, which emphasises their natural character.
- Rice: wafer-thin for pure flavour. Rice long papers are often extremely thin and neutral in flavour. They burn very slowly, which is appreciated during long sessions, but can run out more easily and require a practised hand when rolling to prevent them from tearing.
- Cellulose (wood/flax): The versatile classic. Often the basis for many long papers, both bleached and unbleached. The burning behaviour and thickness can vary greatly here. Look for FSC-certified pulp for a more sustainable choice.
Bleached or unbleached: a question of taste and the environment?
- Bleached long papers: Classic white, often bleached using oxygen or other processes. They are neutral in flavour and widely used.
- Unbleached long papers: Recognisable by their natural, often brownish colour. They do not require bleaching agents. Many users appreciate them because of their potentially more unadulterated flavour and the environmental aspect. Especially when it comes to the longer burning time of long papers, some prefer the purer flavour of unbleached sheets.
So: the choice is ultimately a matter of taste. If naturalness is important to you, unbleached long papers are a great option.
Thin or thick? The right grammage for your long paper
The grammage (g/m²) indicates how thick or thin a longpaper is. This not only influences how it feels, but also how it burns and how easily it can be turned - an important factor, especially when it comes to length.
- Ultra-fine (< 14 g/m²): These wafer-thin long papers (often referred to as 'Slim', 'Extra Fine' or 'Thinnest') promise minimal paper flavour and a slow, even burn.Ideal for flavour purists. ⚠️ But beware: they are more sensitive and require more dexterity when rolling, especially at long lengths.
- Standard/medium thickness (approx. 14-18 g/m²): A good compromise between thinness and stability. These long papers are easy to handle, still offer a relatively neutral flavour experience and are robust enough for most rolling techniques.
- More robust (> 18 g/m²): Thicker longpapers are rarer, but they do exist. ✅ They are very tear-resistant and are forgiving of rough handling or beginner's mistakes during long rolling. ❌ However, the paper flavour can be more noticeable here.
💡 Tip: If you are unsure, start with a medium grammage (approx. 14-18 g/m²). Then experiment to find your perfect balance between flavour and handling.
Twisting long papers made easy: step by step to the perfect long bag
Making a long cone is no problem with the right long papers and a little practice. These instructions describe the basic steps for an even result (this is a purely technical description of the process):
- Prepare & place filter: Choose a stable filter tip that fits the width of your longpaper. Fold it carefully (e.g. with a 'W' or 'M' fold on the inside) so that it provides support and does not let anything through. Place the longpaper in front of you with the adhesive surface facing upwards and away from you and place the finished filter at the left or right end (depending on your preference).
- Spread the mixture evenly: Place your prepared mixture in the crease of the sheet. ⚠️ Make sure that the mixture is distributed as evenly as possible over the entire length - without lumps or empty spaces. This is crucial to avoid uneven burning ('canoeing') later on. Do not fill in too much, otherwise the paper will be difficult to close.
- Moulding & rolling: Carefully pick up the paper and its contents and gently roll it back and forth between your thumb and index fingers. This will form an even, cylindrical roll and optimise the distribution of the contents.
- Folding in ('tucking') & closing: This is the crucial step. Push the front (non-gummed) edge of the paper behind the mixture and roll it up along its entire length. Start at the filter and work your way to the tip. Once the edge is evenly creased, moisten the gumming and finish rolling the bag. Gently smooth out the adhesive seam.
- Compacting & finalising: Hold the finished roll vertically with the filter facing down and tap it lightly on a firm surface. This helps to compact the contents and minimise air pockets. Optionally, you can twist the open tip together slightly.
💡 Pro tip: Leave the finished creation to rest for a moment before lighting it. This allows the moisture in the gum to dry, which promotes more even lighting and burning. When lighting, make sure to heat the tip evenly all round.
Everything included: long papers with tips - now also with activated charcoal filters!
Don't fancy looking for long papers and tips individually? Then combi packs are the perfect solution! Many brands offer their most popular longpapers in practical booklets that already contain matching cardboard Filter tips. Everything ready to hand in one pack - ideal for travelling.
The trend: activated charcoal filters in a combi pack
Long paper packs containing not only standard tips but also activated charcoal filters are becoming increasingly popular. These filters can make the smoke noticeably milder and more pleasant by reducing unwanted substances without significantly affecting the flavour. Especially with larger quantities of smokeables, as often found in long papers, many people appreciate this additional comfort and the smoother smoking experience. Look out for labels such as 'Connoisseur + Active Filters' or similar.
Are long papers legal in Germany?
Short and clear: ✅ Yes, long papers are absolutely legal in Germany. Like any other cigarette paper, they are considered a normal smoker's item. You can buy and possess them without hesitation, whether online or in a shop (if you can find them there). There are no special laws or restrictions that relate only to the length of the papers.
What should you look out for when buying? (checklist)
The choice of longpapers is huge. This checklist will help you find the best longpapers for your needs:
- ✅ Format: king size (more volume) or king size slim (more flavour)? What suits your style?
- ✅ Material: Do you prefer robust hemp, wafer-thin rice or classic cellulose? Bleached or unbleached?
- Grammage: Ultra-fine for maximum flavour or slightly thicker for easier handling?
- ✅ Features: Do you need a combo pack with tips or even activated charcoal filters?
- ✅ Brand: Do you have a favourite brand (e.g. OCB, RAW, Gizeh)? Or would you like to try something new?
- ✅ Price: Compare the prices of the longpapes. Larger order quantities are often worthwhile. Buying longpapers in bulk saves money.

FAQ: Your questions about longpapers answered
Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions specifically about longpapers:
Are king size slim papers more difficult to turn than normal king size?
They require a little more practice as they are narrower and offer less 'margin for error'. However, with a little practice, this is not a problem for most people. The potential advantage in flavour often makes up for the small learning curve.
Which long papers burn the slowest?
In general, thinner papers (low grammage), especially those made from rice or hemp, tend to burn more slowly than thicker papers. The 'slow burning' feature that some brands emphasise (such as Gizeh) also indicates slow burning.
Are there special filter tips that are recommended for long papers?
Not necessarily 'special', but the tips should be stable. With slim papers, narrower tips often suit the aesthetics better. For maximum comfort, there are combination packs, some even with activated Carbon Filters. Have a look at our Filters & Tips category!
What is the advantage of unbleached long papers?
Many users find the flavour cleaner as no bleaching agents are used. It is also often the more environmentally friendly choice. Precisely because long papers burn longer, this difference can be noticeable for sensitive palates.
How do I prevent 'canoeing' (uneven burning) with long papers?
Make sure your mixture is very evenly distributed, don't roll too tightly or too loosely, and light the tip evenly. You can find more tips on this in the section 'Rolling long papers made easy'.
