Germinating Seeds in a Zip-Lock Bag

One of the many uses for zip-lock bags is as surprising as it is simple: they work brilliantly for germinating seeds. You just need to keep a few things in mind. Clean the seeds thoroughly beforehand, ideally with a hydrogen peroxide solution, and don't keep the climate too moist, otherwise mould is all but guaranteed.
To germinate seeds in a zip-lock bag, you also need a little sand and, optionally, some seed-starting compost. Lightly moisten the sand and soil and put them into the bag, then spread the seeds on top. Now all that's left is to find a warm spot to place the bag (the exact temperature you need always depends on the plant species). Important: air it out every now and then. A sealed zip-lock bag keeps warmth and moisture very constant, but that also means a risk of mould.
If you want to germinate cacti, for example, you also need to make sure there is enough light. Some plants also prefer a simulated day/night cycle.
Zip-lock bags are also excellent for stratifying plants.
