In roadside traffic checks, urine tests are considered the most common method for detecting drugs. A urine test can trace remnants of cannabis, cocaine, ecstasy, crack, heroin and other drugs even several days after use. Unlike a blood test, however, it cannot determine immediate, acute drug use. So a urine test says nothing about the current state of the person under suspicion, only something about their drug use in the recent past. A urine test should therefore be used above all as a supplementary test after a blood test, since the latter works considerably more precisely.
That said, the urine test is considered especially uncomplicated, as it requires no physical intervention and urine can be produced in any quantity. This makes it a convenient method for detecting drugs. Even so, a urine test may not be carried out in the open street either. In that case privacy must be preserved and the test moved to the police station or hospital.
Another reason the urine test performs rather poorly compared with the blood test is the possibility of manipulating it. There are already numerous methods for testing negative on a urine test despite recent drug use. Using someone else's urine in a drug screening is, of course, illegal.
