Carbon Filters
Activated charcoal filters (ACF) play a central role in almost every grow, as they reliably filter many of the unpleasant odours that arise in a grow.Activated carbon filters in plant cultivation / growing
AKFs are widely used in plant cultivation. For example, they are of great benefit in the cultivation of exotic plants in greenhouses when adverse outdoor conditions exist with regard to air pollution. But these air filters are also widely used for the opposite purpose - cleaning the air of typical plant odours. Almost all commercially available grow boxes therefore have fixed installation options or outlets and inlets for air hoses. Appropriate provisions are now also standard for the essential fan.Determining the required power capacity of an AKF
Unfortunately, it is not enough to simply hang a random activated carbon filter in combination with a standard tube fan in the grow box. The choice of components and their performance depends heavily on the size of the room, the length of the connecting hoses and, of course, the desired air circulation frequency. As a rule of thumb, you can assume a 30-fold ventilation per hour (this is an average empirical value that cannot be applied to all types of grow boxes).
Based on the room volume in m³ (e.g. 6m³), 35% is initially added (+2.1 = 8.1). This is due to the influence of the AKF, which reduces the fan performance. The hose length of the exhaust air system is then added (this also reduces the output). With a length of 2 metres, the value would then be approx. 10. This value is now multiplied by the desired ventilation frequency. We therefore need a fan-filter combination with an output of approx. 300m³/h.Other possible applications
Of course, AKFs are not only to be used in greenhouses or grow boxes, but rather wherever unpleasant odours occur. For example, this type of activated carbon filter is often used in commercial kitchens or pubs. Not forgetting the benefits for smoking households with a non-smoking population. An appropriate exhaust air system - provided with the necessary pressure by the fan - is very well able to eliminate any hint of cigarette or cigar odour in just a few moments and thus restore peace and quiet to the home.
