Coco media

Items 1 - 3 of 3

Coco substrate is becoming increasingly popular as a medium for growing plants. Here you will find a wide range of media based on coconut fibre. Coco substrate is sold as a peat block or in the form of swelling tablets, to which you have to add water so that they can swell. There are also coco peat pots, which are very suitable for growing cuttings. If you use coco as a grow medium, you are opting for an intermediate stage between soil and hydro, which only has a solid medium in between, but where the nutrient supply is the same as with hydro grow. This also means that the pH and EC values need to be closely monitored.

Coco peat is a natural product made from the utilised shell waste of the coconut and is therefore very ecological. It contains the remains of the shell and epidermis of the coconut, which are compressed into fibre form and produce a sterile, inert and nutrient-free grow medium. As the material is highly absorbent but also sufficiently porous, it allows the plants to absorb nutrients and water quickly, which results in accelerated growth.

Advantages of a grow project on coconut fibre

  • All the advantages of hydro, but easier to handle
  • Faster nutrient availability
  • Shorter grow time
  • Higher yield due to more targeted fertiliser application
  • Less pest infestation
  • Better aeration of the roots

Coco-Grow requires precise pH and EC value control

Water quality and precise nutrient application are extremely important when growing on coco. It doesn't hurt to be familiar with hydroponics, as the regulation of pH and EC values is very similar for both methods. The water must not contain too many mineral salts, as this will make it more difficult for the plants to absorb nutrients.
An ideal pH value for coco is around 5.8 to 6.0 during the vegetative phase of the plants, and it may well rise to 6.5 during the flowering phase.
